🔍 What is an LCL Tear?
The Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL) is located on the outer side of the knee. It connects the femur (thighbone) to the fibula (outer shinbone) and helps stabilize the knee against forces from the inner side. A tear typically occurs due to direct impact to the inside of the knee, causing overstretching or rupture of the ligament.

⚠️ Signs & Symptoms
- Pain on the outer side of the knee
- Swelling and tenderness over the lateral knee
- Instability or the knee "giving way" during side movements
- Bruising around the knee
- Stiffness and limited range of motion
- A blow to the inside of the knee (common in football, wrestling, rugby)
- Sudden twisting or pivoting movements
- High-speed trauma or falls
- Hyperextension of the knee joint
- May occur in combination with ACL, PCL, or meniscus injuries
- Clinical stress tests (Varus stress test)
- MRI scan to evaluate the grade of tear and rule out associated ligament or meniscal injuries
- X-ray to assess any bone involvement
